Shocking things about Surat Fire accident
On Friday, a massive fire broke out in a coaching institute in Surat, Gujarat. 22 students died in the incident. A probe was ordered on this and it revealed some shocking things about the incident.
Here are some of the devastating facts about the incident:
- Total of 22 students died in the dreadful fire accident. Among the dead, 18 were girls.
- Highly inflammable tyres were used as chairs in the classroom.
- The fire spread quickly due to flex. Moreover, the building does not comply with fire safety norms.
- The ceiling was just five feet high. As there is a lack of enough space to use a chair in that room, tyres were used instead of chairs for the students to sit.
- The firefighting operation was hampered to some extent due to distance from the location. The high capacity fire tenders took time to reach the location as they were placed at a significant distance nearly 45 minutes away.
- The builders, Harshul Vekaria and Jignesh Paghdal, are on the run immediately after the fire accident.
- However, the owner of the coaching institute, Bhargav Butani, was arrested on Saturday.
- Gujarat Chief Secretary J N Singh stated that two officials of the Surat fire department, S K Acharya and Kirti Mod have been suspended for negligence.
- He said that a massive drive would be undertaken by municipal corporations to identify the buildings that do not comply with fire safety norms.
- Already 9,900 buildings have been examined. These include houses that conduct tuition classes, the buildings where malls and hospitals are operated.
- More than 9,300 have been issued show-cause notices for not complying with fire safety standards.
- All owners are warned to install firefighting systems otherwise their premises will be sealed.
