Considering the increasing pollution caused by older vehicles, the Rajasthan government decided to ban the operation of 15-year-old commercial diesel vehicles.

It issued orders banning vehicles older than 15 years from March 31 in five cities. These five cities include Alwar, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, and Udaipur.

As the Supreme Court ordered banning the operations of commercial vehicles of older than 15 years than run on diesel, the state government took the decision. The Rajasthan Transport Department said that fitness certificates would not be issued to 15-year-old commercial vehicles in these cities. The vehicle owners need to take permission from the district transport officers to operate such vehicles.

The Delhi government also took a similar decision and directed officials to issue NOCs for diesel vehicles of 10-15-year-old and petrol vehicles more than 15 years old. The government took the decision as per the NGT directive.

At the same time, all diesel vehicles more than 15 years old will be scrapped, and a NOC will not be issued for them.

Meanwhile, the central government also decided not to allow the re-registration of government vehicles older than 15 years. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) issued a draft notification in this regard and invited suggestions or objections to the proposal.

If the draft is approved, the rule will come into effect from April 1, 2022. Earlier in January, the central government approved the scrappage policy for government vehicles. The Ministry proposed it as part of the policy.

The proposal says that government vehicles older than 15 years will not be allowed re-registration. If the rule comes into force, it will help reduce pollution by getting rid of more than 10 million old vehicles like postal and police vans, state transport buses and old ambulances.

The government also wants to impose Green Tax on vehicles older than 15 years if operated on the road. In the case of transport vehicles, the period will be reduced to 8 years.
