Parliament Winter Session to pass certain Key Bill

The winter session of Parliament is beginning from today. It will end on December 13.

The winter session has a total of 20 sittings. There are several important bills including the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 listed to be passed in this winter session.

47 bills are pending in Parliament at present. Among them, 12 Bills are listed for consideration and passing while seven bills are listed for withdrawal.

The remaining bills listed are to be introduced and passed.

The Central government seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 and pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill to make the illegal non-Muslim immigrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, eligible for Indian citizenship.

As per the Citizenship Act, 1955, the applicant must have to reside in India for the last 12 months, and for 11 of the previous 14 years to become a citizen of the country.

Now, the amendment is intended to relax the second requirement from 11 years to six years.

Even though the Centre had introduced the bill in the first tenure, it did not pass due to the protests of opposition parties.

Later, the dissolution of the Lok Sabha led to the lapse of the bill.

Now, the government wants to introduce the bill fresh in the winter session of the Parliament.

The Bill must be passed in both Houses to become a law. There are strong oppositions for the bill in northeastern states including Assam.

Another important bill is the Personal Data Protection Bill. It is related to handling and processing of consumer data by corporate bodies with certain restrictions and penalties.

The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019 was introduced in Lok Sabha and passed there.

The Industrial Relations Code Bill, 2019, the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019, the Companies (Second Amendment) Bill, 2019 and the Chit Funds (Amendment) Bill, 2019 are some important bills to come up in this session.
