Only a few cases need hospitalization now

The number of COVID-19 cases has been increasing in India for the past few days. So, the central government asked all states and UTs to be vigilant. As of now, only five to ten per cent of active cases need hospitalization, but the situation may change at any time.

There may be a rapid upsurge in the number of COVID-19 cases. Hence, states shall be ready to handle the situation by improving the number of hospital beds and oxygen supplies.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan wrote a letter to all states and UTs, asking to augment healthcare workers to manage COVID-19 cases effectively. He added that the situation seems to be under control as of now, but it may change at any time, especially with the rise of Omicron cases.

Hence, all states and UTs are advised to monitor the situation, the number of active Covid and hospitalized cases, people under home isolation, and the number of cases that require oxygen beds and ventilator support. They should monitor the requirement of healthcare workers and healthcare facilities daily and improve if needed.

In this context, Bhushan appreciated the measures taken by various states and UTs to improve healthcare facilities, as many of them established jumbo health facilities and set up the field and temporary hospitals.

Meanwhile, a professor from IIT-Kanpur said that the third wave of the pandemic may end by mid-March. Professor Manindra Agrawal predicted that the third wave could be peak by the end of this month.

Agarwal is the lead of the Sutra, a mathematical Model to track India’s Covid-19 trajectory.

He said that more than four lakh cases would be reported daily during the peak stage. The cases may go beyond eight lakhs.

He also predicted both Delhi and Mumbai might witness the highest number of Covid cases during the peak stage.
