NRIs might get Aadhar card
Soon, Non-Resident Indians might get Aadhar cards as the government is considering it. A decision on this issue will be taken by the government soon. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday invited the diaspora community to actively participate in India’s growth. Ms. Swaraj in her address to the first limited edition of Pravasi Bhartiya stated that a decision regarding allowing women workers to go to Gulf countries has been taken.
Women workers are allowed to go there for employment only through government agencies. This decision is to make sure that the women are not cheated by recruiting agents or firms.
For the first time, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has organized The PBD, a webcast by almost all Indian Missions and Posts. This came after the decision of government to merge Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA).
This event was earlier hosted by the MOIA. The day of PBD is selected as January 9 because it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa and led the freedom struggle.
As he is considered the greatest Pravasi, this day was chosen. Ms. Swaraj has asked the diaspora to participate in the various flagship programmes like Skill India, the Digital India and the Clean Ganga initiatives to help the country develop faster. She further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted Aadhaar card scheme for NRIs.
She said that so far Aadhar card has been given to only the Indians who live in India and that Non-Resident Indians were not given them. She added that now it is good news to know that the Prime Minister wants card to be given to the NRIs just as it is issued to people living in India. She said that PM also wants the Overseas Citizens of India card holders to have it.
