Lok Sabha bans plastic use in Parliament Complex

Plastic has several adverse effects. Yet, the usage has not been stopped in many places.

In order to control the plastic usage in the Parliament House Complex, Lok Sabha Secretariat has prohibited the use of non-reusable plastic water bottles and other plastic items with immediate effect from Tuesday.

In this context, directions have been issued to all officers and other staff of the Secretariat and other related agencies that are working in the Parliament House Complex.

Instead of plastic, they have been advised to use environment-friendly bags or materials.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat stated that this initiative has been taken in response to the call made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the nation to make it free from plastic.

PM Modi in his Independence Day speech urged citizens to stay away from the usage of single-use plastic. He asked to take substantial steps to reach this goal by October 2, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The government is trying to gradually withdraw single-use plastic by 2022. Last year on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, Dr Harsh Vardhan, then Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change had stated this matter. Modi was also present at that event.

Nearly 20 states have issued directions to ban single-use plastic either partially or completely. Maharashtra was the first state to take this initiative.

The government is seeking views from states to completely ban single-use plastic.

PM Modi urged startups to develop technologies to use recycled plastic. He said that the use of paper or cloth bags help generate employment.

He also advised shopkeepers to say strictly no to customers who ask for polythene bags to reduce plastic use.
