India's first Rapid Rail train to debut on Navratri with female pilots

In a historic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first Rapid Rail train, RAPIDX, during the upcoming Navratri festival.

This groundbreaking event will take place on a 17-kilometer priority corridor in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. It is notable for its distinction of being operated by female pilots.

The priority rail track, spanning from Sahibabad to Duhai Depot, was completed approximately four to five months ago.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is overseeing the project, connecting Delhi and Meerut.

As part of the grand unveiling, the NCRTC will also introduce the RAPIDX CONNECT app and a locally-built platform screen corridor.

The Sarai Kale Khan terminus in Delhi, serving as a pivotal hub connecting future Regional Rail Train System (RRTS) corridors, is anticipated to be unveiled during this momentous occasion.

By 2025, the Delhi-Meerut RAPIDX network, spanning 82 kilometers, aims to be fully operational.

These RRTS corridors, originally proposed during the UPA-II administration, will significantly improve connectivity between major cities in the National Capital Region and Delhi.

RAPIDX trains boast a range of modern features. These six-carriage trains include four standard coaches, one premium coach with reclining seats and ample legroom, and a dedicated coach for female passengers.

The trains feature pilot cabins at both ends, accommodating 407 seats in a 2×2 arrangement and overhead luggage racks. Besides, the train will have space for 1,061 standing passengers.

Onboard amenities include WiFi and charging ports at every seat, a public address and display system, and dynamic route map displays. Also, there will be designated spaces for wheelchairs and an emergency alert system.

Speed guns are installed to monitor the trains’ actual speeds.

Notably, RAPIDX parking offers free parking for cars parked for under 10 minutes, with a nominal fine for extended durations.

Parking facilities have been arranged at various destinations like Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Duhai etc.

The RAPIDX system is designed to operate at an impressive speed of 180 km/h, making it the fastest urban transport system in India, akin to the Vande Bharat’s broad gauge.

The introduction of this cutting-edge transport system enhances connectivity in the region. At the same time, it also marks a significant milestone in promoting female participation in critical roles within the Indian transportation sector.
