Indian universities ranked – Which ones are in top

The National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) has just released its university rankings for 2018.

The NIRF is the only national ranking framework for higher education institutions in India.

The government of India introduced these rankings in 2016. There were four categories of higher education institutions in 2016: universities, pharmacy, engineering, and management.

In 2017, two more categories were added: college and overall. This year, three more categories were added: medical and dental colleges, law, and architecture.


In 2017, over 3,000 applications were received.

In 2018, almost 4,000 applications were received.

For the third year in the row, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc Bangalore) is at the top, leading the lists in both the university category and the overall category.

For the overall category, IISc Bangalore is once again at the top of the list.

The other top five spots are taken up by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur.

Delhi’s Jawaharlal University (JNU) is in sixth place. Anna University, Chennai, is a new entrant in the overall top 10 list.

For the university category, IISc Bangalore is at the top of the list again. JNU Delhi, last year’s second place, comes in second again this year.

Banaras Hindu University (Varanasi), last year’s third place, is in third place again this year.

For the college category, Miranda House continues to be in first place. Delhi University dominates the college category, since five of its colleges are in the top 10 list.

St. Stephens is in second place. The other colleges in the top ten list are Hindu College in 4th place, Shri Ram College of Commerce in 7th place, and Lady Shri Ram College in 8th place.

For the engineering category, IIT-Madras takes the number one spot for the third year in a row.

Eight of the spots on the top 10 list for the engineering category are taken up by IITs.

For the management category, the top four spots are taken up by the top four IIMs: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, and Lucknow. IIT-Bombay follows them in fifth place.

For the pharmacy category, the number one spot is taken up by the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali.

For the architecture category, the top spot is taken up by IIT Kharagpur.

For the medical category, the top spot is taken up by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS, Delhi).

The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER Chandigarh) comes in second place.

For the law category, the National Law School of India (NLSIU) comes in first place. The National Law University in Delhi is right behind it in second place.
