Government to strengthen NSG
According to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the government is making plans to “strengthen” the country’s elite counter-terror force — NSG. They would be provided with better infrastructure and weapons.
The minister spoke about this issue after inaugurating a composite building for the counter-hijack squad of the force near Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). He said that he is also very interested in forming a new category of medals for these commandos and for other special forces. These medals would be given in recognition of their ‘shaurya’ (bravery) to boost their morale.
The minister also appreciated the efficient work of National Security Guard (NSG) for their role in fighting the terror attack early this year at the Pathankot IAF base which ensured that there was “no damage to the strategic installations and equipments” inside the air force station.
Singh announced that he would personally ensure that all their infrastructural needs are met. He said any special force like NSG needs special training and very sophisticated equipment. He assured that the Home Ministry will take all steps to strengthen NSG. He also talked about how countries across the world are facing problems of terrorism.
The counter-hijack squad complex which was inaugurated was modelled on the pattern of the German special counter-terror force GSG-9. It was built at a cost of Rs 38 crore. The base has several crucial assets of the force like a base for ‘black cat’ commandos who do counter-hijack operations, a sniffer dogs’ squad and a bomb disposal squad.
Singh said that NSG commandos have a deep sense of national pride and they should be honored for their efficient and noble work. He said that the commandos have a special place in the heart of the people. He added that the country feels safe whenever the NSG is deployed. He congratulated and appreciated them for their job.
