Government forms panel for framing community kitchen scheme
To provide food to the people in need that are not covered under the Public Distribution Scheme (PDS), the central government decided to launch a community kitchen scheme and form a panel to discuss this matter.
Union Food Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the all-India Food Ministers meeting yesterday. At that time, he announced the setting up of a group of state food secretaries for the framework of this new scheme.
Along with Food Ministers and Food Secretaries of various states, Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs Ashwini Kumar Choubey and Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey also joined the meeting.
In this regard, Goyal asked the panel to deliberate on the framework of a community kitchen, which should be simple and transparent. It should ensure proper nutrition for children and provide food to all the people in need.
He also said that Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) distributed food grains to the poor during the pandemic, above the quota under the National Food Security Act. He said that the scheme may be the world’s largest food programme.
The community kitchen scheme will be of the community and run by the community for their welfare. Goyal said that it would be built on four pillars of quality, hygiene, reliability and spirit of service.
The next meeting will be held on November 29 to discuss the further improvements on this matter.
Earlier, the Supreme Court directed the central government to come up with a model community kitchen scheme. The court also directed all states to attend the meeting conducted by the centre to come up with an agreeable community kitchen scheme for all states and union territories. The apex court gave three weeks and asked to come up with a model community kitchen scheme within that time.
