Data of 20 crore Twitter users leaked
In a shocking incident, emails of over 20 crore Twitter users have been leaked. Alon Gal, Chief Technology Officer of Hudson Rock, posted about it on social media. It is one of the most significant data leaks, as per Gal.
Though Gal posted about the data leakage on December 24, Twitter has not responded or commented on it. Hence, it was not clear whether Twitter had taken any action to probe or redress the data.
Hackers hacked the email addresses of more than 20 crore Twitter users. The stolen data has been posted on an online hacking forum.
The leaked data showed the names of many famous people and celebrities, including Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma etc.
The BBC said that the leaked data would pose a big threat to anonymous users who created their Twitter accounts using sensitive email addresses.
Many news channels were not able to verify whether the data circulated online and whether the screenshots found on the hacker forum were authentic or not. Security experts say that such leaks may often contain fake or duplicate data as well.
As of now, there are no clues about the hackers behind the data leak. Neither the identity nor the location of the hackers has not known. Some experts suspect that the data leak might have taken place in 2021, that was before the acquisition of Elon Musk.
It was said that emails of more than 40 crore email addresses and phone numbers were stolen in December 2022. But, now, emails of as many as 20 crore users have been circulated on a hacker forum.
The Bleeping Computer website that downloaded the email addresses confirmed that they were accurate for many Twitter users. However, it said that the data contained duplicate information also.
