Cyclone Vayu Updates
Cyclone Vayu disrupted the life of Mumbai yesterday due to heavy rainfall and high speed winds.
As cyclone Vayu is going to landfall on Thursday in Gujarat, cyclone alerts have been given by the authorities in 10 districts.
Operations at all ports and airports situated near the coastline have been stopped for the moment and the fishermen in the sea were called back.
Several flight operations also have been cancelled.
According to the latest updates given by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone will cross Gujarat coast at around afternoon today.
A severe cyclonic storm and high speed winds of up to 165 kmph are expected while it is crossing the coast.
In Mumbai, a man died due to the cyclone as he was hit by an aluminum panel.
Two more people sustained minor injuries due to the floating debris.
In this context, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government was watching the movements of Cyclone Vayu in Gujarat as well as other parts of India.
He revealed in his series of tweets that NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and other agencies are constantly working to provide the necessary assistance to people.
People living in low-lying areas that have been given cyclone alert are being shifted to safe places.
The authorities have planned to evacuate nearly three lakh people from cyclone-prone zones to safer places.
More than 1.6 lakh people have been evacuated so far by the Disaster Management Authority people.
These have been moved to safe shelters.
It is anticipated that the Cyclone Vayu will move further northwards. It is likely to cross the coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Veraval and Diu region. Hence, a severe cyclonic storm is predicted.
