Nearly half of the people in the country are not getting adequate meals per day. There are many reasons for this. Yet, the most common reason is that majority of people cannot afford adequate food with the meagre resources they have.

In other words, they cannot meet their fundamental basic needs with the little amount they earn.

Indian government and different state governments had launched different food schemes to solve the needs of poor.

These schemes aim to provide food at the affordable rates to the poor.

On the occasion of 93rd birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) launched ‘Atal Jan Aahaar Kendra’ centres in the National Capital.

People can get lunch for ₹10 in these food centres.

The scheme was formally launched on December 25, the birthday of Vajpayee by the Mayor of South Delhi, Chairman of the civic body’s Standing Committee and the Leader of Opposition.

Rice, puri-sabzi, chapattis, chole, rajma, vegetable and halwa are provided in these food centres.

The meals in these centres will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. And the main notable thing is the food is available for ₹10.

One can get the food on all week days at the given time. The main motive behind this initiative is to make quality and tasty food available to underprivileged people.

The birth anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is celebrated as the Good Governance Day; hence the move is taken to step forward.

Initially, half a dozen aahar kendras or food centres were launched. It will be expanded in a phased manner.

More centres will be opened and dinner will also be included later according to the needs.

In addition to the SDMC, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) also launched a food centre as a pilot project in Shalimar Bagh area. Its name is ‘Atal Rasoi Deen Dayal Aahaar Kendra’.
