In the realm of health care, the Government of India has unfolded a bouquet of comprehensive health insurance schemes, ensuring the well-being of its diverse population.

From the expansive Ayushman Bharat Yojana to state-specific initiatives, these schemes aim to bridge the healthcare accessibility gap.

Here is a snapshot of some pivotal schemes:

With a mission to offer free healthcare services to over 40% of the population, Ayushman Bharat stands as a universal health insurance scheme. Launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, it provides a substantial health cover of ₹5 Lakhs, encompassing medicines, diagnostics, medical treatments, and pre-hospitalization costs.

Geared towards providing accident insurance cover, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana offers an annual cover of ₹2 lakhs for total disability and death, and ₹1 lakh for partial disability. Accessible to individuals aged 18 to 70 with a bank account, premiums are seamlessly debited from the policyholder’s account.

Introduced in 2007, Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana tailors health coverage for citizens aged 18-59 residing in rural and upcountry areas. Offering a premium of ₹200 per annum, it extends coverage to landless citizens and provides scholarships to underprivileged children.

Operational since 1954, the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) provides comprehensive healthcare for central government officials and pensioners residing in select cities. It offers free specialist consultations and services. Besides, it covers hospitalizations, X-rays, laboratory examinations, and health education.

Employment State Insurance Scheme is a multidimensional scheme. It offers social and economic protection and extends full medical care insurance to workers and their families. Encompassing cash benefits for sickness and disability, it caters to permanent factories with over ten employees.

Designed for those in the impoverished category (18-59 years), Janshree Bima Yojana includes features like Women SHG Groups and Shiksha Sahyog Yojana, covering 45 occupational groups.

Catering to families below the poverty line, the Universal Health Insurance Scheme covers medical expenses and compensates ₹50 daily for a maximum of 15 days when the earning head of the family is hospitalized.

These schemes represent a collective effort towards ensuring affordable and accessible healthcare, marking a significant stride in India’s pursuit of health security for all.
