A Breakthrough Surgery at KIMS Hospital

The transplant team at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences ( more popularly known by the acronym KIMS ) has achieved a very rare procedure. They have achieved a simultaneous transplantation of kidney and pancreas on a 30 year old Type 1 diabetic patient. This is a breakthrough procedure. This procedure has been led by the senior transplant surgeon Dr Srinivas Prabhu Chava. This surgery is the first ever pancreatic transplant surgery to be performed in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The patient who has been suffering from diabetic problems for 19 years has reached a critical stage with complications like impaired visions, diabetic nephropathy and end stage kidney failure. This has affected the patient very drastically for one year. In order to get his life back to the normal stage, the patient needed a transplant of the kidney and pancreas. Hence, this breakthrough procedure has been done.

Dr B Bhaskar Rao, chief cardio thoracic surgeon, managing director and CEO of KIMS has stated that everyone is proud of the achievement of the team led by Dr Srinivas Chava. Dr Srinivas Chava has stated that such unique procedures are important in saving lives. He has stated this procedure will help the patient to live a better lifestyle and improve his quality of life. Another benefit of this procedure is that it will be useful in preventing or slowing the progression of diabetic complications. With such unique procedures making way into India, newer procedures will certainly be on the way.
