37 Central Acts valid in Jammu and Kashmir

Now many Central Acts including GST, IPC etc. are applicable in Jammu and Kashmir. Before the abrogation of Article 370, many laws that are applicable in all other parts of India were not applicable in Jammu and Kashmir.

This is due to the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir. The abrogation of Article 370 integrated the Valley with the rest of the country and whatever laws are applicable in the rest of India will now be applicable in this area.

In addition to that, the citizens in Jammu and Kashmir will have only the citizenship of India. Earlier, they had dual nationality where one is related to Jammu and Kashmir and another is of India.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved for the laws to come into effect in the Valley and all those are now valid here.

After the abrogation of Article 370, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 came into effect on October 31, 2019. And this approval is consistent with Section 96 of that Act.

According to the Act, the government can use its power to amend existing laws in Jammu and Kashmir by revoking or amending them within one year of the constitution of the union territory.

As many as 37 laws will be applicable in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Some of those Central Acts that will be applicable in the newly formed union territory of Jammu and Kashmir are the Income Tax Act, 1961, the Goods and Services Tax (GST), 2017, the Real Estate Act, 2016, the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860 and the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), 1973.

Besides, anyone can now buy property in Jammu and Kashmir; earlier non-locals were not eligible to buy property there.
