Ways to improve your social skills

Social skills are important to lead a peaceful life in society. Interaction with peers and neighbours and communication are required. But, not all people have the same social skills.

Some people can easily make friends, speak to strangers, communicate with others easily, and share their feelings even with strangers. On the other hand, some people cannot share their feelings even with their beloved ones.

Social skills affect your physical and mental health. As per many studies, those who lack social skills and interactions have a greater risk of developing dementia as they age.

In this social media era, communication and interaction are very essential to progress in life. They help relieve depression and anxiety. In addition, they boost your confidence and self-esteem. Hence, social skills are vital.

Here are some ways to improve your social skills:

  • Active listening is the key to communication. However, many people do not possess the skill. Rather than being good listeners, they try to speak always in conversation with others. As a result, others think a conversation with them is a boring thing.
  • Improve your communication skills. Learn to communicate your feelings properly and firmly. Also, observe silence when it is needed. Give some space to others as well.
  • Encourage others to talk more in an interaction. Also, be attentive to their words to progress your conversation positively. Body language, eye contact and tone of voice are also important in physical interaction. So, pay attention to them as well.
  • Improve your emotional intelligence. Observe your thoughts and emotions. Also, pay attention to the factors that trigger you so that you can control them while you interact with others.
  • Give compliments to others. Try to remember the names of others and use them during your interaction with them. Also, talk politely.
  • Not just starting a conversation, one should also know when to stop it, as nobody wants to be involved in it for hours. So pay attention to the fact.
