Why you shouldn’t suppress your emotions
Emotions can affect our physical health as well as our mental health, in both beneficial and harmful ways. However, suppressing one’s true feelings can be the most health-damaging of all, even though it may seem like the best way to project strength onto an outward appearance.
In truth, the expression of one’s true feelings can allow one to lead a more productive and efficient life, and it allows for better relationships. Moreover, the suppression of emotions can have several damaging effects on physical health as well. These are eight physical ailments that can be caused by emotion suppression.
Emotion suppression can lead to certain sleep disorders, such as insomnia. The brain cannot cope with the suppressed emotions, and restless dreams can cause a lack of sleep throughout the night.
Suppressed emotions can cause a great deal of mental energy drainage, which can lead to both mental and physical tiredness. It is also difficult to think clearly when emotions are suppressed.
The suppression of emotions puts the body under a lot of stress, which can damage the body’s immune system. Therefore, this can lead to the body being much more vulnerable to diseases.
The brain’s function is closely connected with gut function, and emotion suppression can therefore negatively impact the gut. It can cause nausea, constipation, or an upset stomach.
Emotion suppression can lead to the onset of allergies or asthma. This is especially prevalent when suppressing sadness, which causes inflammatory responses in the nose and eyes.
Suppressed emotions can even cause skin problems, such as eczema. This is a condition of hyper inflammation, and it cannot be cured until one’s emotional situation is sorted out.
Emotion suppression can also cause heart ailments. Since the brain’s function and the heart’s function are closely connected, the suppression of emotions can negatively impact the heart, and even cause heart attacks.
The suppression of emotions can worsen the effect of injuries on the body. Since the brain is dealing with bottled feelings, it cannot focus as well on healing physical wounds.
