Prevent Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease (CHD), or coronary artery disease (CAD), is one of the leading causes of death across the globe. The disease is caused due to the accumulation of fatty deposits in the walls of coronary arteries. It leads to the interruption of blood supply to the heart muscle, which results in a heart attack.

The risk factors for CHD include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and a family history of heart disease.

Though the disease is life-threatening, you can protect your arteries and reduce the risk with a few changes in your lifestyle. There are many ways to prevent CAD or reduce the risk of developing the disease.

Here is are the ways to prevent Coronary Heart Disease:

  • A healthy diet helps prevent CHD, especially with a low-fat and high fibre diet, you can reduce the risk. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits daily. Reduce the intake of salt. Also, limit saturated fats like cream, butter, coconut oil, palm oil etc. Rather than using saturated fats, use unsaturated fats like olive oil, sunflower oil, vegetable oils, avocados, nuts and seeds.
  • Stay active. Do exercise regularly. Aerobic exercises strengthen the heart muscle and prevent many heart conditions. Experts suggest 150 minutes of moderate to intense aerobic exercises or 75 minutes of high intensity exercises a week to keep your heart healthy. These exercises also help reduce high blood pressure. Besides, they keep your cholesterol and diabetes in control. They also help control weight since it is one of the vital things to prevent the risk of developing CAD.
  • Smoking leads to many life-threatening conditions. So, quit smoking for your overall well-being. If you have a habit of alcohol consumption, limit it. Drink moderately.
  • Keep your blood pressure and blood sugar in control by following a healthy diet and lifestyle. Stress also can damage artery walls. So keep it in control by practising yoga and deep-breathing exercises. You can also relieve it by doing meditation or listening to your favourite music.
