Natural ways to prevent Glaucoma
Glaucoma is one of the most serious eye conditions that can lead to blindness. As the disease does not give any warning signs in the beginning, one must be careful to detect it early. Otherwise, it can cause permanent vision loss.
The most common cause of glaucoma is the accumulation of too much pressure inside the eye, i.e. intraocular pressure. This pressure can damage the optic nerve, which results in vision loss.
Glaucoma has no cure. The vision loss caused by it is irreversible. Hence, it is better to use natural ways to prevent it and eat a healthy diet.
Here are some natural ways to prevent glaucoma:
A healthy diet plays a vital role in preventing glaucoma. It also protects you from many eye diseases. Eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin A and C and carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin to protect your eye from oxidative stress. Also, add antioxidants and omega-3-fatty acids to your diet to prevent age-related macular degeneration.
Maintain a healthy weight. If you are a diabetic, keep your diabetes in control. Wear sunglasses to avoid direct exposure to the sun as UV rays are harmful and can damage your eyes.
Exercise improves blood flow to all your body parts, including the eyes. So do moderate exercises and practice simple yoga daily. However, some yoga poses like headstands, standing forward bends, downward-facing poses etc., are not good for glaucoma patients. They may worsen the condition. So, seek the advice of your eye doctor before starting exercises.
Regular eye-checkup can help detect the disease early. So, get screened for glaucoma and other eye diseases regularly. Glaucoma runs in some families. So, if you have a family history of this disease, you must take extra precautions.
Stress and anxiety can increase intraocular pressure. So practice meditation to reduce the risk. Also, add food that helps reduce stress, such as broccoli, garlic, dark chocolate etc.
Good dental hygiene is crucial to prevent many diseases. Some studies showed that periodontal gum diseases increased the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
