Health Benefits of Shallots

Shallots or small onions are related to garlic and can have a color from golden brown to rose-red.

They have a distinct flavor due to which they are popular across the globe.

They are widely used in French and South Asian cuisines. They are added to salads and pickles.

France is the largest producer of shallots. They are loaded with many nutrients.

Here are the health benefits of shallots:

  • Shallots are rich in iron, copper, and potassium. Hence, they help stimulate the production of red blood cells and thereby blood circulation.
  • The allicin in shallots helps regulate cholesterol levels in the body. They produce an enzyme called reductase in the liver which can aid in controlling the cholesterol production.
  • Shallots also improve the health of the heart by controlling cholesterol levels in the body. They can prevent various heart conditions including coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.
  • Being rich in potassium and allicin, shallots improve the release of nitric oxide in the body to control high blood pressure levels. Potassium helps relax the walls of the blood vessels and promotes free blood flow in the body.
  • The two phytochemicals in shallots – allium and allyl disulfide contain anti-diabetic properties. Hence, they regulate blood sugar levels in the body.
  • They improve brain function due to their vitamins and minerals. They have gamma-aminobutyric acid, a vital neurotransmitter to relax your brain, calm nerves, and provide relief from stress.
  • The calcium in shallots helps improve bone density and bone health.
  • They are also beneficial for skin health and hair growth.

Precautions:

  • Though shallots are beneficial, people with bleeding disorders should avoid their consumption as they can slow down blood clotting and increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Those who are under medical prescription for diabetes should avoid using them as they further reduce blood sugar levels. Consult a physician before consumption.
