Karonda is believed to have originated in the Himalayas. It is scientifically called as Carissa carandas.

It is known as Bengal currant or Christ’s thorn in South India. The leaves, flower and fruit of the shrub help treat various ailments.

The fruit has a sour and acidic taste and gets sweetened in its ripened state.

Karonda has the following health benefits:

  • Karonda is rich in fibre, hence beneficial in treating abdominal conditions. The powder made with dried fruit when consumed with water alleviates pains and treats indigestion, bloating, and gas.
  • Being rich in vitamin C, it can treat fevers. It also fights against infections effectively.
  • Regular consumption of Karonda fruit is beneficial to improve mental health. The vitamins and minerals like magnesium and tryptophan in this fruit stimulate the production of serotonin.

  • Karonda fruit juice is beneficial for heart health. Regular consumption of this fruit juice is believed to strengthen cardiac muscles.
