Health Benefits of Karonda
Karonda is believed to have originated in the Himalayas. It is scientifically called as Carissa carandas.
It is known as Bengal currant or Christ’s thorn in South India. The leaves, flower and fruit of the shrub help treat various ailments.
The fruit has a sour and acidic taste and gets sweetened in its ripened state.
Karonda has the following health benefits:
- Karonda is rich in fibre, hence beneficial in treating abdominal conditions. The powder made with dried fruit when consumed with water alleviates pains and treats indigestion, bloating, and gas.
- Being rich in vitamin C, it can treat fevers. It also fights against infections effectively.
- Regular consumption of Karonda fruit is beneficial to improve mental health. The vitamins and minerals like magnesium and tryptophan in this fruit stimulate the production of serotonin.
- It also controls constipation and improves appetite.
- Karonda fruit juice is beneficial for heart health. Regular consumption of this fruit juice is believed to strengthen cardiac muscles.
- It is effective in treating inflammation. Consuming this fruit suppresses the inflammation-causing agents.
- It can treat bleeding gums, biliousness, and anorexia.
- It is effective in controlling excessive thirst.
- You can easily make Karonda juice. Take a few fresh fruits. Cut them and remove seeds. Blend them in the mixer by adding water. Filter it. Add salt and sugar to taste. Consume it to get the above mentioned health benefits.
Precautions:
- Consume the fruit for a shorter period. Consumption for longer periods is believed to affect sexual health by lowering libido and reducing the production of semen.
- Excessive consumption may also lead to hyperacidity.
- Avoid eating unripe fruit as it may cause a burning sensation.
- It even can worsen bleeding disorders.
