Health benefits of Black cumin seeds

Black cumin seeds or Nigella seeds are also known as Kalonji. They are well-known for their medicinal properties.

They have been used for ages as a natural remedy for several health conditions.

Here is a list of health benefits of black cumin seeds:

  • Black cumin seeds help lower cholesterol. They control LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the body. They prevent the accumulation of cholesterol in your blood. Thereby they prevent the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
  • Some studies showed that kalonji seed powder increased HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol level) in the body.
  • Kalonji seeds are loaded with many antioxidants like thymoquinone, carvacrol, and t-anethole. Hence, they prevent oxidative stress and damage to cells. They protect against several chronic health conditions, like diabetes, obesity, heart problems etc.
  • The thymoquinone component in kalonji has potential anti-cancer properties. Some test-tube studies revealed that kalonji seed extract helped neutralize breast cancer cells.
  • Some other studies showed that they persuaded cell death in blood cancer cells. Kalonji seeds are effective against various types of cancers, like lung, prostate, cervical, skin, pancreatic and colon cancers.
  • Due to their anti-inflammatory properties, black cumin seeds help protect the body against many infections and diseases.
  • Kalonji seeds have antibacterial properties. One study showed that kalonji treated a staphylococcal infection effectively when applied topically to the skin of infants. They were found to be effective against various types of bacterial infections in different studies.
  • They help control blood sugar and prevent the side effects caused by diabetes. They also reduce insulin resistance.
  • Some animal studies revealed that kalonji could protect the liver against damage and toxicity. Thus, it protects the health of the liver.
  • Kalonji can help protect the stomach lining and prevent the formation of ulcers.

A word of caution:


  • Though kalonji has many health benefits, it may not be good for some people. Some test-tube studies found that kalonji influenced blood clotting. So, people taking medication for blood clotting shall consult their physician before consuming kalonji supplements.
  • Similarly, the application of kalonji to the skin led to dermatitis in some people. So, it is better to apply a small amount to the skin to test for an adverse reaction while applying it topically.
