  • Palming can help to reduce eye fatigue and relax the muscles around the eyes. Rub your hands together to warm them up and place them over your eyes. Breathe deeply for five minutes. Repeat this a few times.
  • Blinking is another exercise that can help to combat eye strain. If you stare at screens, you tend to blink less frequently. It can cause the eyes to dry out and feel gritty. Taking the time to consciously blink can help to restore the tear film and spread tears over the eyes. A simple exercise involves closing the eyes for two seconds and squeezing the eyelids tightly before opening them again.
  • Pencil push-ups are a common exercise used to train the eyes to converge when looking at near objects. To perform this exercise, hold a pencil at arm’s length. Then focus on the tip of the eraser. Slowly move it closer to your nose until it appears double, then draw it away again.
  • Alternating between near and far focus can also help strengthen the eye muscles. To do this exercise, hold your thumb or an object with a letter on it 10 inches from your face and focus on it for 15 seconds. Then shift your gaze to a target 20 feet away and hold your focus for another 15 seconds. Repeat several times.
  • For those struggling with tracking objects with their eyes, a figure eight exercise can be helpful. Simply pick a point on the floor 10 feet away. Trace an imaginary figure eight with your eyes for 30 seconds. Then switch directions.
  • The 20-20-20 rule is another easy exercise. For every 20 minutes of near work, take a break. Shift your focus on a target 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It can help alleviate strain on the focusing system and prevent dry eyes.
  • The Brock String and barrel card are tools used in vision therapy to train the eyes in tracking, alignment, and focusing. The Brock String involves tying a loop on each end of a string, attaching one loop to a doorknob, and holding the string taught directly under your nose. A sequence of exercises can be performed with the string to train the visual system.
  • The barrel card, on the other hand, is used to train the eyes to converge when viewing near objects.

Incorporating these exercises and techniques into your daily routine can help strengthen and relax your eye muscles. They also help reduce strain and fatigue.
