Investors often seek predictable returns without market-linked risk.

The India Post offers a dependable option through the Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS).

This plan suits individuals who prefer steady earnings over volatile gains.

Under POMIS, you deposit a lump sum and receive interest every month. Currently, the scheme offers 7.40% per annum for FY 2025-26.

Notably, the rate for the January–March 2026 quarter remains unchanged at 7.40%. Because the government backs the scheme, your principal stays protected until maturity.

You can invest up to ₹9 lakh in a single account. Meanwhile, joint accounts allow deposits up to ₹15 lakh for two or three adults.

Each joint holder owns an equal share in the investment. However, your total investment across all individual MIS accounts cannot exceed ₹9 lakh.

You may also open an account for a minor above 10 years. Once the minor turns 18, they must convert the account into their name.

The tenure lasts five years. After maturity, you can withdraw the corpus or reinvest it for another five-year term.

Additionally, you may transfer monthly earnings to a Post Office Savings Account or a bank account through ECS. Investors can also redirect funds into a recurring deposit to enhance returns.

You can start investing with as little as ₹1,000. Thereafter, deposits must be made in multiples of ₹1,000.

Although the scheme ensures capital safety, it does not qualify for Section 80C tax benefits. Furthermore, TDS applies to the interest earned, similar to other deposit schemes.

Another key advantage lies in flexibility. You may hold multiple accounts within the prescribed limit.

Moreover, you can appoint a nominee to secure your family’s interests. Importantly, the first interest payout begins one month after the deposit.

POMIS delivers stability, disciplined income, and government assurance. Therefore, it remains a practical choice for conservative investors seeking a consistent monthly cash flow.
