NPS Swasthya: Pension plan that doubles as health support
India is rethinking how people save for retirement while managing rising medical costs.
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority has introduced an updated version of its pilot scheme, NPS Swasthya (PoC 2), aiming to combine long-term savings with healthcare support.
Unlike traditional pension plans, this scheme links retirement savings with medical needs.
It allows individuals to build a financial cushion for the future while also preparing for unexpected hospital expenses. As a result, it offers a dual benefit in one structured plan.
A key change in this version is the mandatory health insurance requirement. Participants must have an active policy, ensuring financial protection during illness.
Interestingly, the premium is deducted directly from pension contributions, making the process seamless and automatic.
To get started, individuals need a minimum investment of ₹25,000. This initial contribution unlocks access to the scheme’s benefits.
Although the entry amount may seem modest, it sets the foundation for both retirement and healthcare security.
One of the most practical features is its flexibility during emergencies. If a serious medical condition arises, subscribers can withdraw their entire savings to cover treatment costs.
This option is available regardless of the total amount saved. Moreover, payments are made directly to hospitals or service providers, reducing hassle during critical moments.
Any unused funds are safely returned to the individual’s account.
Currently, the scheme is in a trial phase and available only to a limited group of users.
However, early signs indicate it may help bridge a key gap in financial planning by combining long-term savings goals with immediate healthcare needs, offering more practical financial security for individuals and families alike.
This updated model highlights a shift toward practical financial solutions.
By combining pension planning with medical support, it creates a safety net that better aligns with real-life financial and healthcare challenges.
