IRCTC’s Travel insurance to Passengers

Do you know that IRCTC offers travel insurance to its passengers? Passengers of IRCTC can avail travel insurance for just a premium of 49 paise.

IRCTC offers this insurance to help its passengers in unforeseen events like accidents. The travel insurance scheme is uniform for all classes. However, the insurance will not be offered to children below 5 years.

Passengers can choose the option of Travel Insurance while booking their train tickets online through the website of IRCTC.

If the insurance option is chosen, then it will be available for all passengers booked under one PNR. After paying the premium, you will receive the insurance policy information through SMS and also on your registered email ID. Insurance companies directly send this to you. You have to fill in the nomination details also at the website of insurance companies. For this, companies will send a link to you.


If nomination details are not filled in by passengers, then the claim settlement will be made to legal heirs.

The travel insurance covers a maximum of ₹10 lakhs. It includes death or permanent total disability due to accidents.

In the event of permanent partial disability, coverage for an amount of ₹7.5 lakhs is available. The coverage also includes ₹2 lakhs towards hospitalization expenses in the event of injury during accidents. An amount of ₹10,000 is paid for the transportation of mortal remains.

At present, three insurance companies provide travel insurance to passengers for ticket booking through the IRCTC website or app. They are Bajaj Allianz General Insurance, Bharti Axa General Insurance, and Shriram General Insurance.

Passengers cannot cancel the premium after the payment. It will not be refunded under any circumstances, even if the tickets are not confirmed. That means, if your tickets are wait-listed and not confirmed, you will not get a refund for the premium paid toward travel insurance.
