If you are investing money in Employee Provident Fund (EPF), then you need to be aware of certain things about availing the money from it. You can avail money from the account for specific reasons. These include the purposes related to marriage or education, medical treatment, buying a plot, construction or alteration and repairs of house, and repayment of home loans. You can withdraw money prior to your retirement.

You can withdraw money from your EPF or get a loan on it. Here is a list of reasons for which the amount is permitted from your EPF.

If you completed at least 7 years of service, then you can get a loan on EPF for your marriage. The maximum loan amount is 3 times of the total amount you get for the entire service. You can avail loan for your sibling’s or child’s marriage as well. You can get a loan for your or your child’s education also.

If you or any of your family member is in need of medical treatment and has to be admitted in hospital for a month or more then you can withdraw the amount from your EPF. No minimum service is essential for this but a certificate from ESI and doctor are needed. The maximum amount you can withdraw is 6 times of wages or Full of Employee share (whichever is less is applicable).


You can avail money from your EPF for construction or purchase of house or repayment of housing loan. But you can get this only once. You should finish at least 5 Years of service for construction or purchase of house and 10 years of service for repayment of housing loan. The maximum amount you can get this for is 36 times of your wages. You can get 24 times of your wages for purchase of a plot if you finished 5 years of service. 12 times of wages can be availed for alterations of your house if you finished 10 years of service.

If you are aged 54 or more, you can withdraw money from your EPF for only once prior to your retirement. No minimum service is required for this.
