EPF Withdrawal Rules Simplified: Check Limits and Eligibility
Employees can now access their provident fund savings more easily to manage essential expenses, housing needs and unexpected financial difficulties.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has simplified its advance withdrawal framework, bringing different purposes under three broad categories.
The revised provisions under the EPF Scheme, 2026, also standardise the minimum membership requirement for partial withdrawals at 12 months.
However, members must meet the conditions applicable to their chosen withdrawal category.
The revised framework specifies different withdrawal limits based on the purpose. Medical advances have no prescribed limit on the number of withdrawals.
Education expenses qualify for up to 10 withdrawals during membership, while marriage expenses allow up to five.
Similarly, members can access their EPF savings for eligible housing needs up to five times during membership.
For special circumstances notified by the Central Board, withdrawals are permitted up to twice in a financial year.
EPF Advances for Medical Expenses
- Members can use their provident fund savings to meet eligible medical expenses for themselves or their family members.
- Unlike other categories, medical withdrawals have no specified limit on frequency under the reported framework.
- Nevertheless, applicants must satisfy the applicable eligibility conditions before requesting an advance.
Education and Marriage Expenses
- EPF advances can help members manage eligible education expenses and marriage-related costs. Members may apply for education withdrawals up to 10 times during their membership.
- Meanwhile, marriage-related withdrawals are permitted up to five times.
- These provisions offer financial support during important life events without requiring members to rely entirely on loans or other savings.
Housing-Related Withdrawals
- Members can seek advances for eligible housing requirements. These include purchasing a house or plot, constructing a property, repaying a home loan and renovating an existing home.
- However, housing withdrawals remain subject to the prescribed conditions and a maximum of five withdrawals during membership.
Under the revised guidelines, eligible members can withdraw up to 75% of their EPF balance after completing 12 months of membership, subject to applicable conditions.
The balance includes employee and employer contributions, along with accumulated interest.
Members should verify the applicable withdrawal limits and eligibility requirements before submitting an online claim through the EPFO portal.
The simplified framework provides greater flexibility for accessing EPF savings.
However, members should review the official scheme provisions carefully, as withdrawal limits, qualifying conditions and the amount payable may vary by category.
