Rock bottom fares from SpiceJet
In order to beat the competition in low fare air tickets, SpiceJet has announced a new scheme. Under it, they are offering air tickets at base costs as low as Rs 444 on some destinations in its domestic network. The offer obviously has a select booking period and limited number of seats.
As soon as this ‘Monsoon Bonanza Sale’ was announced, Air Passengers Association of India (APAI) wrote to aviation regulator DGCA asking if it was considering any action on such “bogus” schemes by airlines.
The sale will last for five days. It was launched on June 22, 2016 and will be open till the midnight of June 26. The travel period for this offer is between July 1 and September 30. The SpiceJet promo one-way base fare of Rs 444 is only for select sectors. This includes destinations like Jammu-Srinagar, Ahmedabad-Mumbai, Mumbai-Goa, Delhi-Dehradun and Delhi-Amritsar routes. Depending on the travel distance and other factors, the fares would change.
IndiGo, GoAir and Air Asia India also recently launched their respective low-fare offers. The APAI wrote to Directorate General of Civil Aviation that these airlines are using bogus schemes on passengers. The APAI wanted to raise concern over these issues
APAI founder and national president D Sudhakara Reddy said that they started receiving complaints from around 10.20 AM from many of their members. The members said that such fare is not available even for short distance of less than 500 km.
The APAI members said that fares are for flights originating from Delhi and for nearby destinations like Amritsar, Chandigarh, etc.
The members say that no such fares were available for other destinations even in the first half of the day. They said that these offers are nothing more than gimmicks on gullible passengers. Reddy also asked in the letter, what action the DGCA wanted to take.
