Tips to Motivate Employees

Motivating employees about work is the combination of fulfilling the employee’s needs and expectations from work and workplace factors that enable employee motivation – or not.

These variables make motivating employees challenging.

Every employee is motivated about something in his or her life.

Employee motivation describes an employee’s intrinsic enthusiasm about and drive to accomplish work.

As a manager or owner, what can you do to keep employees motivated, even when times are tough?

Here are few tips to motivate your employees:

Let Them Know You Trust Them

A vote of confidence can go a long way. So, let them know you trust and depend on them.

Let them know you trust them to do the best job possible and they will rarely disappoint you.

Give Purpose to employees

You can motivate your employees by giving them a purpose.

When you accomplish that, they understand the vision better and they can execute more strongly.

In addition, by understanding their purpose and the purpose of the business, an employee is better able to understand how they fit into your industry.

Use Simple, Powerful Words to Motivate Employees

Use words like please, thank you, and you’re doing a good job.

How often do you take the time to use these simple, powerful words, and others like them, in your interaction with staff?  Sometimes provide gifts as a reward on performance based.

Incentive

Although we haven’t implemented it yet, we’re developing a feedback system that rewards employees for engaging with our wiki and for learning how to use our application via our training videos.

We further reward performance based on meeting certain goals. A proven motivation for students and employees alike is earning a “badge” or points for committing to certain tasks.

Provide Regular Feedback for Employee Motivation

Motivation and morale builder employees identify first is knowing how they are doing at work.

They want to know when they have done a project well and when you are disappointed in their results.

They need this information as soon as possible. They need to work with you to make sure they produce a positive outcome the next time.

Set up a daily or weekly schedule and make sure feedback happens. You’ll be surprised how effective this tool can be in building employee motivation and morale.

Focus on the Development of people

Most people want to learn and grow their skills at work. No matter their reason: a promotion, different work, a new position or a leadership role, employees appreciate your help.

Talk about changes they want to make to their jobs to better serve their customers.

Encourage experimentation and taking reasonable risk to develop employee skills.

Get to know them personally. Ask what motivates them. Ask what career objectives they have and are aiming to achieve.

Make a performance development plan with each person and make sure you help them carry out the plan.

The quarterly performance development meeting is your opportunity to formalize plans for people. You can make their career.

Behave equally with everyone

Work with each employee to create their own personal development plan.

Then, provide them with coaching and mentoring and help them increase their skills and their sense of competence and accomplishment. Monitor the progress of your employees towards accomplishing their goals and objectives – then provide rewards to reinforce positive behavior, increase their sense of progress and keep them motivated.

People expect you to know the goals and share the direction in which your work group is heading. The more you can tell them about why an event is happening, the better. Share the goal and the context.
