Karkotak Nageshwar Mahadev Temple relieves Kaal Sarp Dosh

Karkotak Nageshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the legendary temples in India. It is located in Jaitpura, Varanasi. It is one of the ancient temples. Devotees worship the deity with great faith. A local fair is also organized here.

Karkotak Nageshwar temple, the well of serpents, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Shiva Linga remains submerged in the water of the well in this temple throughout the year, except on the day of Nag Panchami.

Devotees from all over the country visit the temple on the auspicious day of Nag Panchami. It is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. This year, it was celebrated on August 2.

The well is cleaned on Nag Panchami to recede the water level. Due to this, the Shiva Linga is visible, and pujas are performed. Devotees believe that worshipping Karkotak Nageshwar Mahadev will eliminate the fear of death due to all types of poisons and relieve Kaal Sarp Dosh.

As per astrology, Kaal Sarp Dosh impacts life badly, which includes hurdles in life, health issues, loss of job and finances, quarrels in the family etc.

The place has great significance, as per Skanda Purana. As per the holy scriptures, sage Patanjali Maharshi spent time in penance here. He wrote a commentary on Panini’s Ashtadhyayi. It is also believed that the Shiva Linga in the well was consecrated by the Maharshi.

However, not much information is available on the exact date of the original construction of the temple. But it is one of the oldest parts of Varanasi. The well is square-shaped, with steps on four sides. There might have another deep and original well.

A sheet of iron that acts as a door separates the well from its deeper part. Locals also believe that the deeper part of the well leads to Naga Lok. It is also believed that there are hidden treasures, and snakes guard them.
