Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple in Mangadu, near Poonamallee in Chennai, stands as a powerful symbol of devotion, divine energy, and ancient tradition.

Devotees from across the world visit this sacred site to worship Goddess Kamakshi and seek her blessings for marriage, childbirth, health, and spiritual peace.

What makes this temple truly unique is its deep mythological and spiritual significance.

According to legend, Goddess Kamakshi performed intense penance here to reunite with Lord Shiva, meditating on one leg in the scorching heat. This act of devotion gives the temple its spiritual power.

Devotees believe that praying at this temple helps remove obstacles and fulfils heartfelt desires, especially those related to family and personal well-being.

A rare feature of the temple is the idol of Goddess Kamakshi holding a parrot, symbolising grace and divine communication.

Also present is Lord Vishnu, known as Sri Vaikunda Perumal, who is believed to have visited the temple for his sister Kamakshi’s wedding to Lord Shiva.

This adds another layer of sanctity to the temple. The temple is also home to the sacred Sri Chakra, installed by the great saint Sri Adi Shankara.

It is believed to emit divine energy and enhance spiritual connection. The 43-sided Sri Chakra is central to many Hindu spiritual practices, and its presence makes the temple a vital spot for meditative worship.

Devotees follow unique rituals, such as offering two lemons, one of which is returned after pooja. This lemon is kept in home prayer rooms, believed to carry the goddess’s blessings.

Many devotees also present sarees to the goddess as an offering of gratitude when their wishes are fulfilled.

Visiting the temple every six weeks is considered highly auspicious. People especially visit on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, when the spiritual energy is believed to be strongest.

Temple festivals like Chithirai, Navaratri, and Masi Magam draw thousands, who come to celebrate with devotion, music, and rituals.
