Government has no decision on getting Facebook, twitter servers to India
Government of India has stated that it has not made a decision yet on whether or not to establish servers of websites like Facebook and Twitter in India. However, it regularly interacts with those websites in order to manage unlawful content on the internet.
Communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has stated that the government is still unsure of whether or not to establish Facebook and Twitter servers in the country. He further added that many security agencies have found difficulties while dealing with encrypted communications from various service providers.
He said that all over the world, there are several service providers like WhatsApp, Viber, Skype etc. They are used for sharing data, video, images, email etc anytime in a secure manner. The security in these services is achieved with the help of encryption technology and many people use these services globally.
The minister stated that at times these services may also be used by anti-national and criminal elements, which pose a security threat. He added that there are several aspects involved in security enforcement agencies getting such encrypted communication in a readable format. These include technical, international relationship, legal and regulatory policy, commercial and security requirements etc.
