In order to honour the soldiers that sacrificed themselves for the country since Independence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a National War Memorial near India Gate yesterday.

The Memorial also honours the soldiers that sacrificed their lives in the UN Peace Keeping Missions.

Here are some important facts about the National War Memorial:

  • National War Memorial has been constructed in an area of more than 40-acre land.
  • The proposal for building a War Memorial for the soldiers has been going on since 1975. But, it was only approved by the government on October 7, 2015.
  • The entire cost of the project is ₹176 crore. A global competition has been held to select the design of the construction.
  • The names of 25,942 heroes have been inscribed on the 16 walls with their rank and regiment.
  • The project was completed in a record time of one year from February 2018 to February 2019.
  • It has four concentric circles, radially outwards. They are named as follows: the ‘Amar Chakra’ or Circle of Immortality, ‘Veerta Chakra’ or Circle of Bravery, ‘Tyag Chakra’ or Circle of Sacrifice and ‘Rakshak Chakra’ or Circle of Protection.
  • The 16 walls in the ‘Tyag Chakra’ area have the names of more than 25,000 brave heroes.
  • The names of soldiers that have made supreme sacrifices have been inscribed in golden letters on granite tablets. These are arranged in a circular pattern and represent the ancient Indian war formation ‘Chakravyuh’
  • The outmost circle is the ‘Rakshak Chakra’. It comprises of more than 600 dense trees in a row. Each tree represents several soldiers that protected the integrity of the nation in their duty.
  • A Param Yoddha Sthal has also been built in the main complex.
  • The park consists of bronze statues of 21 awardees of the Param Veer Chakra, the highest wartime gallantry medal of the country.
