India’s hope at 2018 Commonwealth Games
In only two days, the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will begin. In the recent Commonwealth Games, Indian athletes have performed considerably well.
People in India have high hopes for their athletic contingent this year, which consists of 225 members.
Indian athletes won 50 medals, 101 medals and 64 medals in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively.
Therefore, in the last three editions of the Commonwealth Games, the Indian athletic contingent has won a total of 215 medals.
Fans of these Indian athletes are expecting another very successful year this time around.
These are some of the athletes for whom Indians have high hopes to win medals.
P. V. Sindhu, the badminton champion, is seeking to land a better result after she earned her bronze medal four years ago in Glasgow.
Last year, she lost in the semifinals in the All-England Championships.
Sindhu will also be the flag bearer for the Indian contingent.
All of this puts a lot of pressure on her to bring pride for her country and earn a better medal.
Four years ago, in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, wrestler Sakshi Malik made her first appearance on the international stage, and she walked off with a silver medal.
At the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Malik became the first female Indian wrestler to win an Olympic Medal.
Last year, she won the gold medal at the Commonwealth World Championships, but she lost in the first round of the World Wrestling Championship.
Thus, Malik has great expectations to fulfill at these 2018 Commonwealth Games, both to make up for her failures and live up to her successes.
Boxer Vikas Krishan is on a comeback, after he was struck by injury and disciplinary issues last year.
He has put the 2012 London Olympic Games behind him, where he was knocked out in the quarters based on a video review.
This year, Krishan won the gold medal at the Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria, being the first Indian to be judged as the best boxer at the event.
This is Krishan’s first Commonwealth Games, and he is hoping to make a name for himself in the boxing event.
