Odd – Even vehicle rule may return in Delhi

In order to curb the increasing pollution in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party may bring back the odd – even vehicle rule in Delhi.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot has given a hint on this by asking his officials to check the feasibility of implementation odd-even scheme again in Delhi.

The minister in his letter to Delhi Transport Corporation stated that as the pollution levels in the Nation’s capital has been on a rise, the government is taking every possible step to reduce it and it is seeking emergency measures including odd-even scheme.

The odd-even rule was implemented twice in Delhi from January 1-15 and April 15-30 in the last year.

It is aimed to control the number of vehicles on Delhi roads so the emission of harmful gases would be cut down.

Under the scheme, both odd and even numbered vehicles ply on alternate days.

The Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) to enforce the Graded Response Action Plan last week.

It is also said it would not hesitate to enforce the ‘odd-even’ plan. Cars would be ordered to be off the roads and schools will be closed if needed. Already a ban was put on the use of diesel gensets in the national capital-region.

The Supreme Court had also put a ban on sale of fire crackers in Delhi on occasion of Diwali due to high pollution levels in Delhi. The ban is still going on which will continue till November 1.

The main aim is to prevent the NCR from becoming a gas chamber due to this festival. Yet, poor air quality was observed on the next day morning after Diwali though it was comparatively better than last year.

In this context, the Court also remembered the pollution levels in this area during and immediately after Diwali last year and stated the ill effects of burning fire crackers. It is also stated that the Court observed the decline of air quality each year during the festival.
