Indian archer in Round of 16 in women’s individual archery
Deepika Kumari performed very well in archery taking her to the Round of 16 of Rio Olympics 2016. She managed to defeat Georgia’s Kristine Esebua. The match between the two came very close in Round of 64. After that victory she qualified to Round of 32 where she faced Italy’s Guendalina Sartori. Deepika acquire a dominant victory and now she is in Round of 16. Deepika is not the only Indian archer though, Bombayla Devi will also compete in the Round of 16 later.5
Deepika started off with a 9,9,9 in the first set and won it 27-26 against Kristine. In the next round, her opponent gave her good competition by getting a 27. The third set is where Deepika shined. She aimed a hat-trick of 10s while it was three 9s for her competitor. In the next set, her opponent got a 29-27 making the match intense. The last set was a draw for 10,10,9, letting Deepika enter to the next round.
Her match with Sartori had a weaker start compared to her previous match as she lost the opener of the Round of 32 by 27-24. However, Deepika made a quick comeback with the next set, winning it 29-26 with a 10,10,9. After that, Deepika went on a streak as she won the next 28-26, gaining a lead of 4-2 which increased to 6-2 in the fourth set winning the set 28-17 with an 8,10,1. She won the math 6-2 and got into the Round of 16.
Bombayla Devi qualified to the Round of 16 after defeating Laurence Baldauff of Austria in Round of 64 and Shih-Chia Lin of Taipei in Round of 32.
In the upcoming events, Deepika Kumari will face Taipei’s Ya-Ting Tan while Bombayla Devi will face Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia. If they win, they will enter the quarter-finals.
