In an extraordinary display of determination and skill, India’s 16-year-old para-archer, Sheetal Devi, has left the world in awe of her remarkable achievements at the Asian Para Games 2023.

She clinched a gold medal in the women’s individual compound event, but what makes her victory truly remarkable is that she is the only current female international archer who shoots with her feet.

Sheetal’s journey to becoming a celebrated para-archer was not without its challenges.

Hailing from Loidhar village in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, she was born with Phocomelia, a rare congenital deformity that results in underdeveloped hands or feet.

Her inspiring story began to unfold when her sporting talent was discovered during a youth event organized by the Indian Army in her hometown in 2021.

Despite facing initial setbacks, including attempts to provide her with a prosthetic arm that didn’t fit, Sheetal refused to give up.

A medical assessment revealed her strong upper body, which made her an ideal candidate for archery.

She attributed her robust upper body strength to her childhood days of climbing trees using her legs and upper body.

Her resilience and determination were evident as she not only pursued para-archery but also competed in able-bodied events at the Under-18 level, securing multiple medals.

This year, Sheetal achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female armless archer to win a medal at the World Para Archery Championships in Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Sheetal claimed a silver medal, a testament to her unyielding spirit and dedication.

During her journey at the World Championships, she caught the attention of renowned armless archer Matt Stutzman, who lent his support and expertise to help her perfect her technique.

In the Asian Para Games 2023, Sheetal’s incredible performance continued as she added a gold medal in the compound mixed team event to her growing collection.

She also secured a silver in the women’s doubles event alongside Sarita. Her achievements received accolades from all corners of the country, with prominent figures like business tycoon Anand Mahindra expressing their admiration.

In a heartwarming gesture of support, Anand Mahindra pledged to gift Sheetal a customized car, a gesture that reflects the admiration and inspiration Sheetal’s journey has ignited in the hearts of many.
