Indian Americans to receive the highest scientific honors in US
US President Barack Obama gave the honour of Presidential Early Career Awards for a group of 106 Scientists and Engineers. Of these 106 people, there are six Indian Americans who will be receiving the US government’s highest honour for young independent researchers. These are the scientists who are being honoured.
Milind Kulkarni
Milind Kulkarni works as an associate professor with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. He does research about Programming Languages and Compilers. He holds graduation of B.S. in Computer Science and Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Kiran Musunuru
Kiran Musunuru works as an Assistant Professor of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology at Harvard University. He is also an Associate Physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. One of his achievements is the ‘genome editing’ approach to permanently reduce cholesterol levels.
Sachin Patel
As a professor of Psychiatry, Molecular Physiology, and Biophysics, Sachin Patel works at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre. He researches about the role of brain function in psychological disorders.
Vikram Shyam
Vikram Shyam works at NASA’s Glenn Research Centre as part of the Turbo-Machinery and Heat Transfer Branch. His work and research about computational and experimental analysis of biomimetic, energy harvesting, engine flow physics, flow visualization, and water purification earned him fame.
Shwetak Patel
Shwetak N. Patel works at the University of Washington as the Professor in Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering. He works on developing new sensor systems and new interaction technologies. He is also a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Community.
Rahul Mangharam
Rahul Mangharam works at the University of Pennsylvania as an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering. His work focuses on real-time scheduling algorithms for networked embedded systems. He did his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University in Electrical & Computer Engineering.
