Delhi-Dehradun Highway set for major upgrade
The heavily congested Partapur-Haridwar-Dehradun route, formerly known as old NH 58, is finally set for relief as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) prepares to widen the corridor to six lanes.
Following directives from the central ministry, the Yogi Adityanath government has approved the expansion of the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway, beginning with the Meerut-to-Roorkee stretch in the first phase.
Designated as a national highway, the Partapur-to-Dehradun stretch witnesses overwhelming traffic daily.
The pressure intensifies on weekends when thousands from Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad head toward the hills.
Massive traffic jams often begin on Friday evenings and continue until Monday morning.
NHAI Project Director Amit Pranav has stated that the objective is to free commuters from this long-standing issue.
To address the problem, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has directed NHAI to widen the 80 km-long Partapur-Rampur Tiraha stretch in Muzaffarnagar to six lanes.
A consulting agency has been appointed to conduct a drone-based survey, which is nearing completion.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected to be submitted by March 2026.
Consultant Project Head Rampal Singh Saini noted that the survey findings will determine the scope and design of the expansion.
As part of the upgrade, 20 new underpasses will be constructed to eliminate bottlenecks at intersections.
Service roads will be added on both sides of the highway. In Mansoorpur, where traffic slows down due to markets, a sugar mill and a medical college, a 1.5 km elevated road is planned.
Existing flyovers will be widened, and some land acquisition is likely. The estimated project cost is around ₹3,000 crore.
According to Amit Pranav, the DPR is on track for completion by March 2026.
District Magistrate Dr. V.K. Singh has reiterated the administration’s commitment to reducing traffic woes.
He confirmed that after the DPR is approved, construction will be completed within 1.5 years.
He has also scheduled a meeting next week to discuss the project’s finer details.
The six-lane expansion promises smoother travel, reduced congestion and a long-term solution for one of North India’s busiest routes.
