TRAI to launch upgraded DND app to curb fake calls

Fake calls and spam messages have become a major nuisance for over 1.2 billion mobile users in India.

To tackle this issue, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is set to introduce an upgraded version of its Do-Not-Disturb (DND) app.

This step aims to empower users with better control over unwanted calls and messages.

TRAI observed a sharp rise in fraudulent and fake calls in recent times. In response, the regulator has taken a proactive approach by redesigning the DND app.

The improved app will allow users to block unwanted calls directly, enhancing their control over commercial communications.

The regulator is also exploring the addition of Artificial Intelligence (AI) features to the DND app.

It has directed all stakeholders to evaluate the technical feasibility of integrating AI tools. This move will ensure a better user experience and improve the app’s efficiency in filtering spam and fraudulent calls.

Telecom companies have already implemented AI filters at the network level.

So far, over 800 entities and 1.8 million mobile numbers have been blocked. However, TRAI believes network-level filtering alone is insufficient.

Allowing user-level blocking options will further reduce the burden on telecom operators and enhance security for mobile users.

The earlier version of the DND app, launched in 2016, failed to gain traction among consumers.

Learning from past experiences, TRAI now aims to introduce a more robust and user-friendly tool.

With advanced features and enhanced blocking options, the regulator hopes the new app will become widely adopted.

TRAI’s initiative comes at a crucial time when telecom operators struggle to control the surge of spam calls.

The regulator’s policy updates focus on combating fraudulent communication while ensuring consumer convenience.

The new DND app is expected to roll out next year. Mobile users will not only be able to report spam but also block unwanted commercial calls and messages effectively.

With this upgraded solution, TRAI is optimistic about delivering a much-needed reprieve to millions of mobile users.

The introduction of this app marks a significant step toward improving customer experience and combating the growing menace of fake calls.

TRAI’s focus on user-level tools and AI integration reflects its commitment to ensuring hassle-free communication for all.
