Inspiring Indians fighting illiteracy
A UNESCO global education report has shown that India has reduced a remarkable 90 per cent of the reduction in a number of children out of school since 2000. Here are some Indians who worked hard and played a part in this role.
Shaheen Mistri
Shaheen Mistri and her team worked a lot for children’s education. Her organization, Teach For India currently educates 30,000 children from low-income backgrounds across 7 cities in the country. Their fellowship program hires graduates and professional in a 2-year fellowship and places them in under-resourced low-income schools.
Bunker Roy
Sanjit ‘Bunker’ Roy founder the Barefoot College. It offers an education program for the sake of promoting childhood development in rural areas. The program focuses on practical learning and is different from standard schools.
Madhav Chavan
Madhav Chavan is the co-founder of Pratham. He came up with a low-cost model to offer education to the poor with the help of high-quality teaching strategies to balwadis and government schools. The model was replicated all over the country.
Sugata Mitra
He is famous for his “Hole in the Wall” experiment. His experiment is placing a computer in a wall booth in a Delhi slum. Here children can use it freely. He proved that children of anywhere can be taught with computers without needing any formal training.
Roshni Mukherjee
She made 3,900 videos and uploaded on her YouTube Channel of her online educational platform called ExamFear.com. She teaches various science and math lessons through these videos.
