India and China complete disengagement in eastern Ladakh
India and China have successfully completed the disengagement of troops in the Depsang and Demchok regions of Eastern Ladakh, following a timeline set by recent agreements, according to Army sources.
Joint patrolling in these regions is expected to commence soon, with ground commanders finalizing the operational details.
Marking the occasion, both nations’ forces plan to exchange sweets on Diwali, symbolizing a gesture of goodwill.
Indian Army officials confirmed on Wednesday that they are verifying the disengagement steps to ensure compliance.
In Kolkata, Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Fiehong stated that both nations had reached significant understandings.
He added that these things have paved the way for a stabilized relationship between the two countries.
He referenced the recent BRICS summit in Russia, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a crucial discussion.
Xu noted that the consensus between the two leaders provides a framework for addressing and resolving future issues.
He expressed optimism that their relationship would progress without being impeded by specific disagreements.
India formally announced on October 21 that a new patrolling agreement was in place for Depsang and Demchok, areas impacted by the 2020 standoff.
The disengagement included dismantling temporary structures and restoring the terrain to its prior condition. Following the announcement, satellite images accessed by some news channels showed evidence of Chinese forces removing these structures.
Photos from October 11 depicted tents and vehicles in the Depsang plains, near the Y Junction. It is the junction where Indian soldiers had previously been restricted.
By October 25, the images showed these tents removed, with vehicles moving out of the area.
The agreement allows Indian forces to resume patrolling up to the designated points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) that India claims in these regions, marking a significant de-escalation along this section of the border.
