Malai Biomaterials pioneers sustainable alternatives to leather

Malai Biomaterials, co-founded by Susmith from Kerala and Zuzana from Slovakia, is at the forefront of sustainable material innovation.

Their venture began in 2018. It transforms organic bacterial cellulose from agricultural waste, particularly from the coconut industry in Southern India, into Malai.

Malai is a biodegradable, vegan alternative to leather. This breakthrough material mimics the texture and durability of traditional leather, offering an eco-friendly option for the fashion industry.

Malai is made from coconut water, a byproduct of coconut farms in Kerala.

The cellulose extracted from the coconut undergoes a fermentation process, creating a versatile material that can be moulded into sheets or 3D shapes.

The product is further enhanced by mixing it with natural fibres like banana stem, hemp, and sisal, giving it both strength and flexibility.

The result is a sustainable, compostable material that breaks down in 90-150 days, making it a groundbreaking alternative to conventional leather.

One of Malai’s major contributions to sustainability lies in its alignment with ethical fashion principles.

Being PETA-approved, Malai addresses both environmental and ethical concerns.

The company uses natural dyes and applies water-resistant coatings, offering a wide range of textures and colours for fashion accessories.

With an eye on reducing environmental impact, Malai’s manufacturing process is rooted in a circular economy. It ensures minimal waste and promotes compostable products.

Despite initial challenges, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Malai Biomaterials has continued to grow.

Currently, the company has a production capacity of 200 square meters per month. In addition, it is exploring expansion into new industries such as furniture and interior design.

The company’s focus on using traditional resources in modern applications exemplifies its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Malai Biomaterials’ innovation marks a significant step forward in sustainable material development.

By using agricultural waste to create eco-friendly, biodegradable products, the company sets a new standard for environmentally conscious manufacturing.

As the demand for sustainable alternatives grows, Malai Biomaterials is positioned to make a lasting impact on multiple industries.
