TS girl builds low-cost houses from sewage pipes
Owning a house is a dream for many people. Yet, it is difficult for many underprivileged and middle-class people to own a home.
This young girl came up with a solution to address this problem. Perala Manasa Reddy from Telangana innovated Hong Kong’s O-Pods in India.
She built low-cost homes from sewage pipes. She says the construction of a house takes around 20 days.
Manasa pursued civil engineering from Lovely Professional University (LPU), Punjab.
She lost her father in her childhood. Her mother raised her and her younger sister. She chose paddy cultivation to feed them.
Manasa launched a startup, Samnavi Constructions, for taking up construction activities. She completed her first construction in March 2021.
It was a 1 BHK O-Pod house. The house was constructed on the site given by her relative. The house is 16 feet long and 7 feet tall, which consists of a living room, bedroom with bathroom, and kitchen.
Manasa’s entrepreneurial journey was not smooth. She faced many challenges.
She was discouraged by many people, saying that the project was waste of time and would not work. But, she was confident and moved forward to succeed in her attempts.
Manasa volunteered with some social service organizations to work in slum areas. At that time, she came to know their problems and decided to do something for them. That’s why she chose civil engineering.
She researched a lot for designing low-cost homes for poor people; she learned that Pod-style homes are ideal for her project.
She approached many companies to provide her with a pipe to design the home. A company in Siddipet, Telangana, agreed and offered its support. Manasa’s mother borrowed ₹5 lakhs and gave it to her to construct the structure.
So far, she received more than 200 orders from various states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Odisha.
