The sanitary hygiene revolution
Even in today’s India, menstruation is still a taboo topic. Many people would rather stay silent than addressing the issue.
However, girls in UP are now coming forward to not only talk about it but also spread awareness regarding low cost sanitary napkins.
Vatsalaya, an NGO related to women’s health is working towards spreading awareness regarding menstrual health. They held open discussions on this topic at several places. Many women were taken aback by their “frankness” and “open discussion”.
During the last couple of months, the NGO has been organizing these meeting across seven blocks of Lucknow district. This is their ‘Chuppi Todo’ (Break the Silence) supported by WaterAid India. Many women reacted strongly when asked about voicing their thoughts on menstruating.
There are many myths regarding menstruating in our country. Many people still consider menstruating women as impure and therefore prevent them in entering the kitchen. They are kept in separate rooms and are not allowed inside a temple.
Under the supervision of Arunachalam Muruganatham, the man who designed low cost sanitary napkins, low cost sanitary napkin units were setup.
The NGO is also speaking to the government to expand this industry to rural areas. All in all, this is new revolution is starting to work out in women’s favor.
