Meet an 84-year-old creative artist

An octogenarian from Ajjarakad in Udupi, Mattar Prabhakar Kini is 84 years old. He found his passion for art during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite his age, Kini expresses his creativity through his artwork. He mainly focuses on Lord Ganesha, his beloved deity.

Kini worked as a company secretary and owned an IT trading company before retiring and focusing on his art.

He transformed his flat in Ajjarakad into an art studio during the pandemic, where he spent 3-4 hours creating art using magazine cutouts.

His passion for art inspired him to create collages of Lord Ganesha and other deities. As a result, his name was added to the India Book of Records for having the greatest number of Lord Ganesha images in paper collage form by an octogenarian.

Kini’s daughter, an architect, is proud of her father’s venture into the world of art.

She noted that her father’s love and passion for creativity make it possible for him to realize his dream.

Kini’s passion for art is evident as he organized a free exhibition of his works at his residence. Many art enthusiasts visited it.

In the future, Kini intends to purchase an old house and create an ‘art house’ called Kala Kuteera.

Kini’s vast array of Ganesha art creations now includes other deities and abstract pieces.

He has also created ‘Sri Ganesha Museum’ near Sri Venkataramana Temple in Mulki, Dakshina Kannada, which houses over 500 artworks made of metal, wood, clay, and fibre.

Kini believes his art is for the public to savour, and his work reflects his devotion to Lord Ganesha.

Kini is an excellent example of how age does not limit one’s ability to pursue their dreams.

The pandemic has been a challenging time for everyone, but Kini turned it into an opportunity to invest in his creative pursuits.

His love for art and creativity is an inspiration to many. He has proven that art can be pursued at any age.
