The man who delivered pizza created a multi-crore cake brand
Sunil Vashisht, the founder of the successful brand Flying Cakes, had to overcome numerous challenges to achieve his dreams.
Despite facing initial setbacks, Sunil’s determination and resourcefulness propelled him towards success.
From funding his own education to working various odd jobs, his journey exemplifies the power of perseverance and resilience.
Due to financial constraints, his father could not support his further studies after his class 10. He urged Sunil to take matters into his own hands.
Undeterred by the lack of support, he took up a delivery job at a milk company, earning a monthly stipend of ₹200.
He would distribute milk in the early mornings, collect payments, and then attend college lectures. Thus, he utilized the stipend to sustain himself throughout his two years of college.
Despite juggling odd jobs, Sunil’s commitment to education remained strong. He enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program while simultaneously exploring employment opportunities in Delhi.
From waiting tables at farmhouses and restaurants to working as a salesperson and courier delivery person, he embraced various roles to make ends meet. Nevertheless, the demands of these jobs ultimately led him to quit his studies in the second year.
In 1998, Sunil joined Domino’s Pizza as a delivery boy, aiming to excel in his new role. Within two years, he rose to the position of assistant manager.
However, a life-changing incident occurred when his wife went into labour. Despite seeking permission to leave, he was denied and still chose to prioritize his family.
This decision resulted in him losing his job the next day. Determined to never be an employee again, Sunil made a firm resolve.
In his quest to support his family, Sunil started an egg roll cart near JNU in Delhi. While the venture proved successful for a couple of months, he was later asked to stop by the MCD.
Undeterred, Sunil’s attention turned to the growing demand for desserts, particularly cakes, in Noida. Seizing an opportunity, he decided to open a cake shop in a new mall in Sector 61.
With borrowed money and even selling his wife’s jewellery, Sunil’s dream of owning Flying Cakes became a reality in 2007.
The initial footfall at the cake shop was modest, but fate intervened when Sunil handed a pamphlet to a passing lady who eventually became a loyal customer.
Being the HR Manager of HCL, she signed a contract with Flying Cakes for future events, marking a turning point for the business.
Today, the brand has expanded to 15 outlets across various Indian cities, with each location receiving over 100 orders monthly.
Reflecting on his journey, Sunil emphasizes the importance of perseverance and not giving up when faced with adversity.
His remarkable transformation from limited resources to owning a multi-crore brand is a testament to the power of resilience and unwavering determination.
