At 81, Subbalakshmi is Winning Medals After Learning to Swim at 68

Age often shapes how people imagine their future, but 81-year-old Subbalakshmi is proving that new beginnings can happen at any stage of life.

Today, she competes in swimming championships, wins medals and represents India internationally, despite taking her first lessons at the age of 68.

Her journey began with an unexpected challenge from her grandson, who lives in the United States.

During a family visit, Subbalakshmi accompanied her grandchildren to a swimming pool. When she scolded her younger grandson for talking instead of swimming, he challenged her to learn the sport herself before correcting him.

Rather than dismissing his remark, she decided to take up the challenge. Her doctor had also recommended swimming following knee replacement surgery.

Encouraged by her coach, MM Rao, she finally overcame her hesitation about learning at an older age.

Her late husband supported the decision and bought her first swimming costume. With regular practice and determination, Subbalakshmi mastered all four strokes within two months.

She then entered her first competition and won four gold medals, setting the stage for an unexpected sporting journey.

Since then, she has participated in more than 50 competitions and collected medals at almost every event.

Competing in the 80–84 age category, she has represented India in Dubai, Singapore and South Korea. Earlier this month, she returned from a national competition in Coimbatore with three additional medals.

For Subbalakshmi, however, swimming offers more than trophies. She values the hour she spends in the pool, where she can concentrate entirely on the sport while giving her body a full workout.

Her dedication reflects qualities she developed long before entering the swimming pool.

As a student, she excelled academically and secured a rank in her master’s degree. That same discipline now drives her training and competitive ambitions.

Meanwhile, her family continues to encourage her. They often ask how many medals she has won after each competition, turning her achievements into a source of shared pride.

Her grandson also remains delighted that his playful challenge introduced her to the sport.

Coach Rao, who witnessed her progress from a hesitant beginner to a confident competitor, considers her an inspiration.

Subbalakshmi’s story challenges the belief that sporting ambitions belong mainly to the young. At 81, she continues to swim because she enjoys it and wants to keep improving.

Her journey shows that discovering a passion late in life can open doors to achievement, confidence and a renewed sense of purpose.
